If you haven’t been to the dentist in a while, the unknown can be the hardest part. People often picture the worst — drilling, pain, a long lecture. The truth is most cleaning visits are quiet, fast, and over before you’d guess.
Here’s exactly what happens during a routine dental cleaning at A Smile By Design — start to finish.
1. Check-in and a quick health update
We’ll ask if anything’s changed since last time — new medications, health updates, anything bothering you. This isn’t paperwork for paperwork’s sake. Some medications and conditions affect what we’ll watch for during your exam.
2. X-rays (when due)
Most patients get bitewing X-rays once a year and a full series every 3-5 years. We use modern digital sensors, which use a fraction of the radiation of older film X-rays. Each one takes about a second.
3. The hygienist takes over
Your hygienist will start by checking your gums — measuring how the gum tissue sits around each tooth. Healthy numbers are 1-3 millimeters. Higher than that can mean early gum disease, and we’ll keep an eye on it.
4. Scaling — removing tartar
This is the part most people associate with cleanings: the scraping. Plaque (the soft film) gets removed when you brush. Tartar (the hardened version) doesn’t — it has to come off with instruments. We use either hand tools or an ultrasonic scaler that uses gentle vibration and water. It’s not painful for most patients.
5. Polishing
The gritty toothpaste-with-a-spinning-cup step. This smooths the surface of your teeth and removes surface stains from coffee, tea, and tobacco. It’s also weirdly satisfying.
6. Flossing and a fluoride rinse
A final floss between every tooth, and (often) a fluoride treatment to strengthen enamel. The whole hygiene portion typically takes 30-45 minutes.
7. The dentist’s exam
Dr. Vogler comes in to do a thorough exam: check for cavities, look at existing restorations, screen for oral cancer, evaluate your bite, and review your X-rays with you. If we find anything, we’ll show you on the screen and walk you through the options.
8. Plan and walk out
If everything looks good, we’ll see you in six months. If something needs follow-up, we’ll explain what, why, and what it costs before you leave the chair. No pressure, no surprises.
Total time: about an hour
That’s it. Most of our patients are in and out in 45-60 minutes — back to their day with a clean mouth and a clear sense of where things stand.
