About a third of orthodontic patients today are adults. Most of them are deciding between clear aligners (Invisalign and similar) and traditional braces. Both straighten teeth. They go about it very differently.

If you’re trying to figure out which is right for you, here’s the breakdown from our orthodontic team in Dansville.

When clear aligners are the better fit

When traditional braces are the better fit

The compliance question

This is the single biggest factor people underestimate. Aligners only work when you wear them. 22 hours a day. Every day. For the entire treatment.

If you’ll forget, leave them out, or take “breaks” — your treatment will stretch out, costs go up, and results will suffer. We’ve had patients whose 12-month treatment turned into 24 because they wore their trays 12 hours a day instead of 22.

Be honest with yourself. If discipline isn’t your strong suit, braces might serve you better.

The aesthetics question for adults

Most adults considering orthodontics put aesthetics high on the list. Reasonable. But there are middle paths:

What about “mail-order” aligners?

Brands like SmileDirectClub (now defunct) and others offer aligners shipped to your home with no in-person dental visits. We strongly recommend against them for two reasons:

  1. No exam means missed problems. Untreated cavities, gum disease, or poor bone health can be made worse by orthodontic forces.
  2. No in-person monitoring. Tooth movement is unpredictable. Adjustments often need to be made mid-treatment.

The cost savings aren’t worth the risk to your teeth.

What our consults look like

We do a thorough exam, take photos and X-rays, scan your teeth, and walk you through which option (or options) would actually work for your case. You leave with a clear plan, a realistic timeline, and a transparent cost — no pressure to commit on the spot.
