The single most common question we hear from adult patients considering orthodontics: “Am I too old?”
The short answer: no. Teeth respond to gentle, sustained pressure at any age. We routinely treat patients in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond — and we’ve had patients start treatment in their 70s.
The longer answer: there are real considerations specific to adult orthodontics that we want you to know going in. Here’s the honest version from our team in Dansville.
How biology actually works
Teeth move because of how bone responds to pressure: the bone in the direction of movement breaks down, and new bone forms behind. This process happens at any age. It can be slightly slower in adults than in growing kids, but the difference is smaller than people think.
What’s actually different about adult orthodontics
1. Gum and bone health matters more
Adults are more likely to have some level of gum recession, bone loss, or periodontal history. Before starting orthodontics, we evaluate your gum health to make sure tooth movement won’t make existing issues worse. If gum disease is active, we treat that first.
2. Existing dental work needs planning
Crowns, veneers, bridges, and implants don’t move the same way natural teeth do. We work around them — often successfully, but with care.
3. Treatment can be slightly slower
Adult cases often take a bit longer than pediatric cases for the same movements. We give realistic timelines up front so there are no surprises.
4. Retention is forever
Teeth want to drift back. After treatment, retainer wear is essential — and at any age, but especially for adults, it’s lifelong (usually nightly) to hold the result. Skipping retainers is the #1 reason adult treatments “fail.”
Why adults choose orthodontics
- Crowding that’s gotten worse over time
- Spaces that have opened up after tooth loss or shifting
- Bite problems causing wear, headaches, or jaw pain
- Crooked teeth that are hard to clean (and lead to cavities or gum problems)
- Aesthetic concerns — confidence in photos, meetings, dating
- Setup before larger restorative work (implants, veneers)
Common myths we hear
“My teeth have been crooked for 40 years — they won’t move now.”
Not true. The bone response is the same. We’ve moved teeth that have been in the same position for decades.
“I’ll look ridiculous with braces at my age.”
Plenty of options exist that aren’t traditional metal braces — clear aligners, ceramic braces, lingual braces. Most coworkers and friends won’t notice.
“It will take forever.”
Most adult cases take 12-24 months. For patients only addressing front teeth, treatment can be 6-9 months. That’s not forever in the context of “the rest of your life with a healthy smile.”
“It’s too expensive.”
Most plans run $3,500-$7,000 — comparable to or less than a single veneer or implant. Many insurance plans cover part. Financing is available. Spread over 18-24 months it’s often comparable to a car payment.
What our adult patients say afterward
The most common reaction we hear at the end of treatment isn’t “this was hard.” It’s “I should have done this years ago.” People underestimate how much a straight, healthy smile changes their daily confidence.
